Herb – Black Horehound – Ballota nigra
Black horehound is a plant. Given in the form of tea, it promotes menses, soothes coughs, bronchitis and asthma and acts as a mucus secretion. It is perennial and blooms in the Northern Hemisphere from May to August. It can grow up to 3 feet in height. The whole plant is used in medicine.
Calming nerves, panic attacks, low- spiritedness, fainting, convulsions, migraine, irritable coughs, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis. Stimulates loss of appetite, cures sour belching, intestinal parasites, nausea and vomiting due to nervous system rather than stomach, tachycardia, hypertension, menstruation. It eases labor pains, treats gout, boils and motion sickness. This herb is helpful for asthma, bronchitis and coughs.
Leaves used fresh or dried. You can chew the leaves in a fresh or dry state, then swallow the juices. Dry leaves used for tea. See also other Herbs. The fresh herb is sometimes used to make a syrup. We would recommend this plant for use in a wildlife garden particularly if you have an impoverished poor dry area you wish to fill. It usually takes this hardy little perennial two years to get full established and start producing tiny purple blooms.
