Garlic is a member of the onion or Allium family.  It's a root veg and is a main staple in most of our lives.  There isn't a meal that I don't use garlic to sautee with.  It's a great friend of onions and will provide a warm savory flavor to any dish.  Roast it whole in the oven, or dice it up for a saute in the pan.  It's a staple I could not live with out.  In addition to the intense flavor it provides, garlic is also anti-inflamatory, anti-bacterical and anti-fungal, thus making it a great helper in the medicinal world.
