Mushrooms are categorized in the fungai family.  They are often called toadstools, and have a stem, cap and actual gills under the cap.  They are said to be the lungs of the forest, as in their natural habitat, will absorb all the toxins and pollutants from both the air of the forest and the soil.  Most varieties are poisonous, but they are a good sign when you find them along the forest floor.  I couldn't live with out or edible, domestic button version.
